With the pandemic impacting school operations through the year, the weighted average daily attendance was mostly down in public school systems across the county.
The numbers were down in the Shelby County system and other publicly funded schools operated within the county district and in Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown and Millington suburban districts.
They were up in the Arlington and Lakeland suburban districts.
Overall, the weighted average attendance throughout the public school districts across the county was 174,191 this past year compared to 176,562 the previous year.
The percentages of the ADA total were up in all of the suburban districts except Bartlett. In most of the districts, the increase was minor.
The weighted ADA percentages are used to divide county and local option sales revenue among the school districts for operations. County bonds for school construction are also divided based on the weighted percentages.
The figures are in a report presented by Dr. Joris Ray, county schools superintendent, to Shelby County Trustee Regina Morrison Newman.
The weighted full-time equivalent average daily attendance (WFTEADA) numbers are based on state certification, school officials say.
The figures are higher than regular attendance numbers. Under, the state’s formula, the numbers are weighted differently in different groups of grades in kindergarten through grade 12. There is also a higher weighting for some special education students and for students in career and technical education.
Students in the county school system and other publicly funded schools in the district were involved in remote learning only for much of the year. The suburban districts operated with a combination of in-classroom instruction and remote learning.
The weighted ADA percentage in the county system and related schools is the lowest since the six suburban school districts went into operation in August 2014. That first year, 2014-2015, the county district had 79.25 percent of the WFTEADA.
