I am excited to announce that I received my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on Dec. 29.

I want to take a few minutes to tell you why I am getting the vaccine and give you three reasons why I think you should get the vaccine as soon as it is made available to you.

I believe in these reasons deeply, and I believe they affect each and every one of us.

1. God gave us our physical body for a reason, and we have an obligation to take care of it. Church health has been built on this premise for 33 years. Church Health exists to care for those around us and teach people how to better care for themselves. I don’t want to look God in the face and tell him that I didn’t do everything I could have done to take care of the greatest gift he gave me. By taking care of my body, I’m protecting the bodies around me.

2. It is a privilege for us at Church Health to take care of the patients who walk through our doors. We have a great respect for our patients, who for most of their lives have been underserved and undervalued. I couldn’t live with myself if I knew I gave COVID-19 to someone who is older or vulnerable, knowing full well that I could have prevented it by getting the vaccine. Could you live with yourself knowing that?

3. Could you imagine giving COVID-19 to your mother or grandmother and she get incredibly sick, and possibly die? I know I couldn’t live with myself if I knew I could have prevented that.

All of us want that opportunity at the end of time to look God in the face and say that we lived our lives as best as we possibly could. This is one of those clear opportunities to do what I think that Bible calls us to do. We can be leaders in our community by showing that the science in the vaccine was God giving the greatest minds in the world the opportunity to do something to benefit all of humankind.

Please note that our staff who directly treat and test COVID-19 patients are being vaccinated. We are following Tennessee Department of Health guidelines in order of who to vaccinate.
